Whether you’re taking a boat out with the family for a day of swimming, planning to fish all day with your buddies, or taking your partner for a ride on a WaveRunner, there are some key lake day essentials to make your trip amazing. We’re sharing our list of what to bring to the lake so you can make the best lasting memories!
Change of Clothes & Towels
When it’s scorching out, all you’ll probably think about is jumping into the lake. As the day goes on, the weather may start to cool down and you’ll want to change out your swimsuit in exchange for something dry. Towels and a change of clothes are lake day essentials when you plan to spend the day at Cherokee Lake. If you plan on taking a boat out, we also recommend bringing a windbreaker, sweatshirt, or jacket to help keep you feeling comfortable. Depending on the temperature, it can get quite chilly out on the water.
Food & Drinks
When you’re exploring the vast 28,000+ acres of Cherokee Lake, you’re bound to get hungry at some point. Since grills and cooking equipment are not permitted on watercraft rentals, you’ll want to pack something precooked or other items like sandwiches, trail mix, and hearty snacks. Messy items like melty chocolate and cheesy nacho chips are examples of what not to bring to the lake.
You’ll also want to bring plenty of bottled water to keep your family and friends well-hydrated. While alcoholic beverages are permitted, make sure you have a designated driver who will operate the watercraft. Also, keep in mind that glass bottles and containers should never be brought onto a boat.
Sun Protection
Sunscreen is definitely at the top of the list for what you should bring to the lake. On a beautiful sunny day at Cherokee Lake, the sun can reflect off the water having those rays hit every part of your exposed body. When choosing your sunscreen, avoid spray sunscreen that will make the surface of a boat slippery. Polarized sunglasses help protect your eyes and cut the sun’s glare reflecting off the water. Hats are also handy items, but keep hold of them when speeding across the lake!
A Dry Bag
When boating or using a WaveRunner, things can get wet. Dry bags and dry boxes come in lots of sizes and can do a great job of keeping expensive electronics, like your cell phone, and other items dry. Dry cell phone cases are cheap, often come with a neck lanyard, and allow you to use your cell phone even when swimming. While talking about expensive items, wedding bands, and pricey jewelry that can easily get lost should be considered for your list of what not to bring to the lake.
Safety Gear
When you rent a watercraft with Roscoe & Hooch, there’s no need to wonder what safety gear to bring to the lake! Every boat and WaveRunner will be paired with the correct number and size of life jackets for your entire party. Pontoons and tritoons also have basic first aid kits on board for those unforeseen accidents that can happen, especially when sharp fishing gear is being used.
Canine Companions
Feeling a little down that your furry buddy has to miss out on lake day fun? If your pooch doesn’t shed and weighs 20 pounds or less, they are more than welcome to come aboard when you become a captain for a day with Roscoe & Hooch. Don’t forget to bring their water bowl and snacks, too!
Fishing License
If you’re excited to get out on the water for a fishing trip, you’ll probably know what fishing gear to bring to the lake, but remember that a valid Tennessee fishing license is required for any person 13 years or older on Cherokee Lake. You’ll also want to familiarize yourself with local fishing regulations and catch limitations. These fishing regulations help fish populations to stay healthy and sustainable.
Our list of what to bring to the lake covers the general lake day essentials that will help make your trip a splashing success!
